Nach einem etwas enttäuschenden Album, das Trad-Rock erkundete, kehrte Primal Scream 1997 mit "einem anarcho-syndikalistischen Speedfreak-Roadmovie-Album" zurück. Sie tauften es Vanishing Point, benannt nach ihrem Lieblings-Kultfilm von 1971, und füllten es mit Echos von Spionagefilmen, cavernösem Dub und '60er Jahre Pop, die eine Shoegaze-Manie schufen, die Klang und Groove betonte. Es war eine triumphale Rückkehr zu genreübergreifendem elektronischem Dance Rock und Neo-Psychedelica, aber mit einem schwereren Bounce als ihr bahnbrechendes Screamadelica. Der Bassist Mani von den Stone Roses schloss sich an, fügte Primal Screams Sound eine organische funky Grundlage hinzu und rettete letztendlich die Band. Mit Beiträgen von Augustus Pablo, Glen Matlock, The Memphis Horns und einer Darth Vader Maske ist Vanishing Point ein pulsierendes Album, das auf Improvisation basiert und den Rhythmus in einen psychedelischen Rausch verwandelt, so rebellisch wie der Film, der ihn inspirierte.
